In the past it was named MOGADOR, this coastal city has been conquered by the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Portuguese because of its Its strategic location on the Atlantic Ocean. The current city was founded by the Alawite Sultan sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah in order to give Marrakech which was the capital of his kingdom a cultural and commercial radiation. That’s why during his reign Essaouira became a leading port that ensured up to 60% of foreign trade thanks to its Jewish bourgeois community and caravans loaded with gold and slaves from sub-Saharan Africa. But the importance of this port has declined over time with gradual flourishing of other ports especially Tangier. But; currently Essaouira is well known for its prosperity thanks to the tourist activity especially the Gnaoua Festival and the quality and originality of its products such as thuya and Argan,. Its medina has recently been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
